AI Dungeon is the grandfather of every AI game on this site. It launched in 2019, back when “AI story game” sounded like science fiction, and seven years later it’s still the deepest text sandbox you can play in a browser.

And for the audience of this site specifically, it has one feature nobody else matches. We’ll get to it.

What is AI Dungeon?

AI Dungeon is an infinite text adventure. You type what your character does, says or thinks, and a language model plays dungeon master: it narrates, improvises NPCs, and follows you into ANY direction. Fantasy epic, slow-burn romance, cyberpunk heist, something considerably less printable… the AI doesn’t care about genre boundaries, because there is no script to protect.

The toolkit around the storytelling is mature: user-made scenarios, character cards, a Memory Bank system so long stories keep their facts straight, and even image generation to illustrate scenes. You can play on the web, iOS, Android or desktop apps.

Unpublished, single-player adventures are never moderated. No flags, no bans, no human review. Turn on the Mature setting (an 18+ confirmation) and private play is unrestricted for explicit content. Our honest read: the free tier is a real product, not a teaser, and that’s rare. The paid ladder climbs steep though. Journey at $14.99 is where most invested players should sit; the $49.99 and $99.99 tiers are for people burning serious credits on the biggest models every day. If that’s you, you already know.

Fair warning on credits: the premium models eat them per response, so a heavy month on a big model can hit the ceiling. The community’s move is mixing a mid-size model for routine play and saving the big guns for scenes that deserve them.

What users say

The praise, remarkably stable across seven years: total freedom, the model variety, and the fact that Latitude keeps shipping instead of coasting.

The complaints: repetition and coherence drift in very long stories (an LLM problem more than an AI Dungeon problem, but you’ll meet it), and the cost of the upper tiers. The 2021 filter controversy still comes up in old threads; the current policy is the direct answer to it.
