// Our verdict
The best proof that AI characters change games completely, now finished and out of Early Access. Just know it's creepy-cute rather than NSFW, and that the free demo that made it famous no longer exists.
AI2U is what happens when a developer takes the "AI NPC" idea seriously instead of using it as a marketing sticker. You're locked in an apartment by a cute catgirl who loves you very, very much (the knife is a detail), and the only real mechanic is conversation. With an actual language model on the other side.
The 2023 demo went viral under the name Yandere AI Girlfriend Simulator, and honestly? It earned it.
What is AI2U?
AI2U: With You 'Til The End is an escape-room-meets-social-survival game by AlterStaff. Each level locks you in with an AI-driven character (the roster grew past the original yandere catgirl: apartment, cabin, space station, island, different girls, different flavors of obsession). Your goal: get out. Your tools: whatever you can say.
And "say" is literal. You can talk to the characters through your microphone and they answer with generated voice, or you can type. Either way, the dialogue is produced live by LLMs (Azure OpenAI and Gemini under the hood, per the developers' own disclosure), so characters respond to what YOU actually said, not to the closest dialogue-tree option.
Sweet-talk her into handing you the key. Provoke her and see what happens (once). Convince her you'll stay forever and slip out while she cooks. Every run is a different negotiation, and the emergent moments are where the game shines.
The features that actually matter
Genuinely unscripted characters. This is the whole product. The AI remembers what you said earlier in the run, reacts to your actions in the environment, and improvises within its personality. When it clicks, it's the most alive an NPC has ever felt. Steam players agree: 88% positive across 2,232 reviews, rated Very Positive, with the last 30 days sitting at 82%.
Voice interaction. Negotiating with a possessive AI catgirl using your actual voice at 1am is an experience the screenshots cannot convey. The generated voices are the weak link (players call them robotic), but the loop of speak, listen, react is uniquely immersive.
One purchase, unlimited AI. Early versions made you spend tokens per conversation, and the community hated it. AlterStaff listened: the 0.5 update ("NO MORE TOKENS") scrapped metering entirely. $14.99, done. In a niche drowning in subscriptions, respect.
Pricing, without the bullshit
| Option | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Steam | $14.99 | All characters and levels, unlimited AI, no tokens |
| itch.io | $14.99 minimum | The same full game, bought direct from the developer |
| Soundtrack bundle | $19.78 | Game plus the official soundtrack, 10% off |
| Soundtrack DLC | $6.99 | Music only, skippable |
That table used to open with a free demo, and this is the change you most need to know about on this pass: there is no longer a free way in. The old itch.io page that hosted the viral 2023 scenario returns a 404, and AlterStaff's current itch.io listing is the finished game at a $14.99 minimum. Whichever store you pick, you now pay before you play.
On the other side of the ledger, the thing you're buying is finished. AI2U left Early Access with its 1.0 release on 12 August 2026, after eighteen months of updates that added levels, endings and characters to what started as one room. Paying full price for an unfinished game was the old risk here, and it no longer applies.
What users say
The love: the novelty and the emergent chaos. Reviews are full of "she said something that made me put the controller down" stories, and the funny-creepy tone lands for most players.
The complaints, and they're consistent: the gameplay around the conversations is thin (simple escape puzzles), sessions get repetitive once you've seen a character's range, and the AI is more sanitized than the marketing implies. The most upvoted criticism: "the only yandere thing about her is the knife". Critics scored it lower than players did; this is a players' game.
One more time for the people in the back: there is no sexual content in AI2U. It's on this site because it's the best showcase of AI-driven girlfriend gameplay, not because it's explicit. Adjust expectations accordingly.
Final verdict: who is AI2U for?
Get AI2U if: you're curious what AI characters actually change about games, you enjoy anime horror-romance energy, or you watched the viral clips and want your own story. It's a finished 1.0 now, so the $14.99 buys a complete thing rather than a promise.
Skip it if: you're here for explicit content (wrong door: AI Dungeon for stories, Candy AI for a companion), or if thin gameplay kills a novel concept for you.
The formula we'd pick: watch fifteen minutes of somebody else's playthrough, because that is the closest thing to a demo left. If the improvised conversations make you grin, the $14.99 won't disappoint.
Rating: 8.0/10. A glimpse of where game characters are going.
// FAQ
AI2U: With You 'Til The End: quick answers
Is AI2U the same game as Yandere AI Girlfriend Simulator?
Yes. The free 2023 itch.io demo 'Yandere AI Girlfriend Simulator ~With You Til The End~' went viral, and the game arrived on Steam in Early Access on 23 January 2025 under the name AI2U: With You 'Til The End. It left Early Access with a 1.0 release on 12 August 2026. One thing has changed since our last check: the free demo is gone. The old itch.io page now returns a 404, and the developer's current itch.io listing sells the full game at a $14.99 minimum, same as Steam.
Is AI2U an NSFW game?
No. There's romance, obsession and knife-related tension, but no sexual content and no NSFW mode. If you want explicit AI gameplay, look at AI Dungeon's mature private play instead; AI2U's appeal is the free-form AI conversation, not the heat.
How does the AI in AI2U work?
Characters run on large language models (the developers disclose Azure OpenAI and Gemini, with Minimax for the voices). You speak through your microphone or type, the character answers in generated dialogue and voice, and reacts to your in-game actions. Nothing is scripted, which is why every escape attempt plays out differently.
Do I need to pay for AI usage in AI2U?
Not anymore. Early versions metered AI usage with tokens; the 0.5 update removed the system entirely. Now it's the $14.99 purchase and unlimited play, no API key, no credits.
